Oracle may not be cheap, but you often get what you pay for.

Oracle can scale from a 30M database to terrabytes, and from a couple of users to thousands all while providing concurrent access to data.

It is able to be ran on over 100 hardware platforms running under numerous Operating Systems including every major version of UNIX (Sun, HP, AIX, Sequent, Pyramid, Silicon Graphics, DEC (now Compact) etc...), VMS, NT, and MVS. This means you can host Oracle on a PC all the way up to a mainframe.

Third party products for adhoc tools, and Vendor written applications for MRP, Payroll, etc... are widely available.
