There is an article on my Web-site about the work that SMON does (v7, but most of it still applies to 8.1).

How many extents do you have in the large materialised view ? The more you have the longer it takes to drop an object, and the longer the ST lock (which I assume it the one you mean) is held.

This is an argument against UNLIMINTED EXTENTS, and an argument for using LOCALLY MANAGED TABLESPACES, which you now have in 8.1.
