Guru's
We have recently moved our production database to a larger machine HP K580 with 6 processors and large RAID system, (from HP 380 dual processor). The general perception from all users is that there is no noticable performance increase since the change. We have approximately 4 IIS servers hitting the database as well as about 12 different NT apps moving work through the system.
Our DBA complains that one of our problems is the number of idle connections (approx 200) that the db has to maintain, when usually only 20 or so are active at a given time. Our connections are pooled (with the max being machine configurable) as our apps are multi threaded. It seems to me that 200 or so idle connections shouldn't impact overall performance??
He also complains of our queries (rightly so) which need to be optimized. This I see as an eternally evolving issue for any db. I suspect that some serious work needs to be done on the back end in order to accomodate and take advantage of the new environment properly??
Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.
