Hi John,

             (prepare to be ?frustrated?) - unless you are running Oracle 8i you can't drop a column. If you are using Oracle 8i, sorry but I can't help - I only have access to the 8.0.5. Enterprise Edition documentation (not the 8.1.5. series i.e. Oracle 8i)
