Adding Redo Log group and files

When my database was created, the redo log files are not mirrored. How
can I add more groups and files to address this problem? I tried ALTER
DATABASE ADD LOGFILE MEMBER command to add additional files to an
existing group. Then I checked v$logfile but they were reported
INVALID. What did I miss? Thanks.
