I've just found an installation note (for Sun) which suggests that 3 times real memory is a minimum unless memory is over 1Gb in which case 2 x memory should suffice.

Reading between the lines it seems that the Java Archive system is chewing up real and virtual memory as it unpacks critical library archives.
