Starting "Services" for Oracle on NT - question

I'm new to the NT environment but familiar with Oracle on Unix. The "startup" and "shutdown" commands typically used in svrmgr or even sqlplus, don't "do it all" on NT.

Can someone give me a deeper explanation of what happens when you start a SERVICE (why we have to, exactly)?

Thanks,

Chris O'Connor
