Oracle 8i install problems on RedHat 6.1

Has anyone out there successfully installed Oracle 8i on RedHat Linux 6.1? After following the instructions to the letter, when I run the runInstaller, I get the following error:

[oracle_at_lux oracle]$ ./runInstaller
Initializing Java Virtual Machine from /usr/local/jre/bin/jre. Please wait...
Error in CreateOUIProcess(): -1
: Bad Address

and the installation terminates. The symbolic link to the jre is set properly, as are oracle's group settings and environment variables. I've seen other people get similar errors, but theirs ended with a : Permission Denied, and typically ended up being improperly set jre paths, or something like that. Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated.
