How to do an online backup?

I'm coming from DB2, and there it is easy to do an online backup:
db2 backup database online


This creates a single file, and together with the log files I can
reconstruct the whole database. I've found nothing comparable for Oracle
(8.0.5 is used here). Or am I wrong?
