3 years is a long time in Oracle.

A simple SQL*Plus login used to take
a ridiculously large number of messages, but Oracle Corp. keeps on working to reduce the number of round-trips in all areas.

I regularly log in across a WAN to act
as a remote DBA on sundry sites,
and have no problems with performance.

I think the network packet size is much smaller on a typical WAN connection
(500 bytes vs. 1500 bytes on a LAN)
which does have an effect, especially
if you go over the Internet and not a
private dial-up.
