Look at the ALERT log file for your Oracle instance. It will contain more detailed info as to why there is an error. The filename will be alert<sid>.log where <sid> is the system identifier of your database (e.g. ORCL is the default sid for the Oracle starter database). Hmmm... I see with Oracle8 it seems not to be <sid>alert.log.

Anyway, the file should be in a LOG or TRACE subdirectory in your Oracle \ORANT home directory.

I suggest finding the file, looking up the problem (there also may have been trace files created), and then getting back to this newsgroup with more info.
