My Oracle System won't start

I have recently installed Oracle 8i Enterprise on a Linux system, and after dealing with all the installation stuff, the DB Assistant runs, asks me to create a new database, and when it starts commiting actions to the server, it comes up with an error: "can't log on into the server".

If I run either svrmgr or sqlplus, the system won't let me in, saying that oracle is not running, but when i try to start the server, it says "ORACLE is already running".

I'm really messed up, does anybody know how to get this running?
