Replication

I am in a position of having to set up replication between our production and backup servers and I am absolutely green when it comes to the replication subject.

Assuming that I have set up Synchronous Multimaster replication, what happens if I lose one of my masters? Does the whole thing come to an ugly grinding halt? or does it continue on and update the dead master site when it comes back online?

Any help in this is appreciated
