8i JVM/JServer/Aurora API's

Is it possible to have the 8i JVM store and run Java that is not Stored Procedures or EJB? Just want to make simple RMI calls to Java in the Server for efficiency instead of accessing the db traditionally from JDBC on a remote application server machine with a slower JVM. Do not want the complexity of EJB that is also too new.
