NT Authentication and TNS

I'm having a problem connecting to a database when I am authenticated from my stored profile. When I log into my the network domain (Win NT 4.0 Patch 3) when I'm not connected to that network it uses the stored copy of my profile to log me in. I originally installed oracle 8i while connected to the network.

When I'm authenticated from my stored profile I get

TNS-12571 TNS:packet writer failure or a ORA-03113 end-of-file on communication channel.

If I log into my network I can connect fine. Does anyone know what is happening or what might be wrong. Any help is greatly appreciated.
