There is a limit of the export file even though you have largefile option enabled on your Solaris.
You cannot import a plain export file which is greater than 2GB. You will need to uncompress it and read it at the fly.

Check the metalink. There are article called "2GB or not 2GB" there. You will see.. And your DBA is right!!
