Performance impacts of auditing on Oracle

Can anyone give me a feel for what kind of performance impacts are felt from just turning on auditing on Oracle 8? I've gotten feedback from a couple of DBAs that it's an absolutely horrible thing to do that would have our users after us with pitchforks and ropes. Seems there should be a way to alleviate this situation and still allow us to audit...
