Oracle Application Server is the "Product Formerly Known As Oracle Web Server 2.x" It changed to Web Application Server in the 3.x product releases, and subsequently to Oracle Application Server in the 4.x releases.

There's more to it than a renaming difference, however. There are a number of simple webservers on the market today that simply serve up static html documents over the HTTP protocol to customers. Oracle Application Server does this as well, but provides quite a bit more functionality. For instance...

OAS is more that a simple listener, it provides a foundation for a full "Internet Platform". Go to the Oracle home page (www.oracle.com) or the Oracle Technology Network (technet.oracle.com) for more information.
