hot standby database experiences?

Does anyone care to share their real life experiences with Oracle's hot standby database feature? Positive comments, horror stories, whatever? My initial impression of hot standby is that it's very simple to setup, but could require a lot of attention to keep it functioning well, ie, detecting problems that could invalidate the standby.
