PC Client for 8.0.5 DB on Linux

I'm wondering what client I need to get to access an 8.0.5 db on Linux. I had a copy of Oracle 7 client but it doesn't seem to want to talk properly to the listener, it always seems to want to connect as the same user (Does it look at machine's user name at all, it's a Win 95 box).

I've got the listener running okay and the listener log file does show a request coming in so I'm presuming the error is either in the setup on the PC or some incompatibility of the client I'm using. The username I'm using does exist on the database with connect privileges, and I've also tried connecting as Oracle. Does the hostname require a fully qualified hostname i.e. xanadu.rds.gcn.com or will xanadu work also. I can use either when I telnet to the server from the PC so I'm guessing it doesn't matter.

Do I need to install the Oracle8 client, I tried to do this last night and the setup program crashes every time before it's even started to install anything. I'm gonna download the file again today just in case mine is corrupt.

Any advice on what could be going wrong, I really need to get this working asap so I can next get a web server running and then start developing some web apps :-)

Thanks in advance
