You can drop the "offending datafile" by issueing the following once the database is mounted:
ALTER DATABASE DATAFILE 'd:\orant\database\mydatafile.ora' OFFLINE DROP

Thanks very much to Oracle 24x7 support services who pulled this newbie's arse out of the fire.
