If you don't plan to have a recovery catalog then you really shouldnt use RMAN. Without the recovery catalog it will be very difficult (maybe impossible) to do a point in time recover and recovery in general will be a challenge. In addition, if you lose your control files using RMAN without the catalog you will probably not be able to recover your database at all.

In short, keep your resume updated if you rely on RMAN without the catalog.

I would suggest the traditional way of backup and recovery if you cannot have a separate instance for the catalog and stick with using OS command/scripts to clear the archive logs.
