What version of Linux is this ?
If it is 6.0 ,Have you applied the glibcpatch for ORacle 8 yet ? It is available on ftp.oracle.com

I think Somebody(in the newsgroup) had similar problems which was solved by running 'ldconfig' and setting the LD_LIBRARY_PATH correctly..
