SHMMAX relates to the Virtual Memory Model. The value is the largest segment the SGA can consist of. ie SHMMAX = 800mg, a 1500 mg SGA would be in two segments, 800 and 700.

It seems that the only reason to adjust this value down is to fit multiple SGA's into your Virtual Memory model quadrants. I'm not familiar with Solaris, but in HPUX our suggested SHMMAX is 1 GB and the smallest quadrant has 750mg available.
