Jonathan

My comments were based on what I was told by the course developer of some AQ training we did internally, but when I got your message I tracked back to an old copy of the documentation to try and confirm. In the 8.0 Application Developer's Guide, in Chapter 11 (Advanced Queuing) is the following warning:

WARNING: If you purchase the product, Oracle8, you will not be able to use Oracle AQ.
If you purchase the product, Oracle8 Enterprise Edition, without the Objects Option, you will be able to use Oracle AQ with queues of RAW type only.
If you purchase the product, Oracle8 Enterprise Edition, with the Objects Option, you will be able to use the full functionality of Oracle AQ.

So you're correct. I asked the course developer again, and their comment was largely along the lines of what you implied - most people are going to want object payloads, so they need the Object Option.

I couldn't find an equivalent statement in the 8i doco.

Hope this clarifies matters.
