This one might be a little bit of a mind bender, so please stay with me.
We have an Alpha 21164/333mhz with 512 megs of ram running OpenVMS 7.1 here. The only thing we run on the Alpha is our accounting software (Ross Accounting for our G/L and Admarc 7.1 for our A/R and order processing).
Ross is a flat file DB, written in COBOL yadda yadda, but no problem with it. Admarc, I'm convinced however, proves the a million monkeys with a box of crayola crayons and a million years can not only write a working sendmail config, but a "database" as well. In this case, Admarc uses Oracle as it's backend.
Now, we don't use Admarc anywhere near to it's potential, it's kind of overkill for us, but it's what we need. The actual Oracle Database is about 200 - 250 megs, and that's it. However, our performance is, shall we say, abismal. This system has no more than 12 users who constantly are waiting for the system (and no reports are running, mind you).
The problem is, there are any number of things that could be wrong. If I watch the monitor, the system is fairly idle (less than 6% CPU usage) until a request is made to the DB. Makes sense. However, the system is being buried for normal (indexed) lookups, and forget ad hoc queries. Now, I've seen alot of people say no Oracle on Raid 5, which is what we have. But, in reality, the whole database can fit in Ram, and we only have 12 users on this system. Someone recently said moving the redo logs to a mirrored set off the main volume would boost performance 30%, but even 30% wouldn't cut it here.
Ok, so what am I getting at? Is anybody out there running Oracle on OpenVMS (or an Alpha period for that matter) and can give me an idea what kind of load this system can take? We have gone through and tuned VMS. It seems ok. We have looked for bottlenecks, but so far the results have been inconclusive. I can fully understand what people are saying about No RAID 5, and I agree, but we're talking about 250 megs of data. The parameters for Oracle are ok as well. We've allocated about 150 megs of ram just to Oracle. We discussed turning it up higher, but when it was first setup (consultant, cringe) it only had 16 megs allocated. When we discovered, and turned it up to 150, there was little to no performance gain. Even if it's walking the database, even if the indices are on the same disk, it can still fit most of it in ram. There is not a lot of data here. So am I way off on this?
