Bob,

Welcome aboard! I have felt your pain -- as a Solaris/SunOS Sys Admin for 8 years, I decided the best way to learn Oracle was to come work for the company. I have found that in sheer breath and depth of knowledge, DBA is about 10 time wider/deeper/ uglier than being an SA. Still, I'm buried up to neck in techno - geek-nerd poop and lovin' every minute of it. Somewhere at your site should be the Oracle concepts manual. It is probably where I would start if I were you. If you don't have printed copy, you may find a cdrom titled on-line generic documentation that will have it in html format for you. I also think the O'Reilly Oracle DBA series is very good. Some of the Oracle Press Books are good too.

Good Luck!

:-)Jack
