My experience is not NT but Unix, of 7.3.4 and 8.0.5 running on the same servers. We actually had problems, but with the clients. When the Oracle8 listener was started, we could connect to the 8.0.5 database but not to the 7.3.4, and vice-versa. We worked around the problem by having two listeners, one on port 1521, on on port 1526, each dedicated to the matching version of the database.

This may be where your mixed signals come from. -
