Oracle and TCP Connections

I'm having a little problem with Oracle 8.0.4 and a TCP network. The server and the client is connected through the company WAN. The server is about 3-10 miles from the client.

The client application is written in Delphi and it keeps connection to the database at all times. Even if there is no activity the connection is kept.

Now the connection between the Server and the client keeps going down. It seems that for some reason, the connection will die for about 30-50 seconds, and then my client application can not query the database. I get an error "End of File communication." That all makes sense to me.

How do other people handle this type of problem? Do you connect to the database as needed? Would that increase the overhead of the Client or server?
