There are 2 main types of backups
1) a physical backup of the database files the simplest is to shut down the database (shutdown normal or immediate is preferable) and then backup the datafiles, redo logs, control files, init.ora file ( this is a cold backup)

if you're running NT, also stop the Oracle start, and OracleService NT services otherwise I think you wont get a good backup of your database control files.

2) a logical backup (ie a database export.

You would be advised to take both physical and logical backups on a regular basis and to periodically do a test recovery from your backups.
