Large sorts on snapshots

Interesting one here...

creating a simple rowid snapshot ( select * from source_table) where the source table is very large...

The create statement falls over with temporary tablespace problems..Nothing spectacular here except:

Why was creating the snapshot doing a sort in the first place ?

Tracing the session did not reveal any explicit sorts taking place ....

Any ideas ?
