There's recent thread regarding Oracle vs Informix. I'd suggest you read it. I'm currently ORacle DBA but I've worked as Informix DBA for 4+ yrs and find it a much easier system to administer. Overall, I believe Informix to be better technically but either will do fine for the numbers you describe (which is not all that much). Porting DBs is not a trivial task and don't understand why anyone would port from Informix to ORacle (or vice versa) without compelling reason. If current staff has Informix expertise, then only Dilbert management would switch.
