Oracle 8: spin_count config variable...

I'm without my manuals and in dire need of understanding what the spin_count variable affects. Particularly, I'm trying to understand if it could account for significant performance impact on reads. Any insight or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. BTW, it is currently set to 1, though I have seen servers with it set to 2000.
