When all else fails, RTFM.
Are you logged in as user oracle in group dba with all the appropriate environmental variables set; including LD_LIBRARY_PATH & ORACLE_HOME?

I've successfully installed 5 different 8i instances on 4 different SPARCs this month without any problem.
