Accessing an NT server from Linux Client

I've been trying to get a Linux client (8.0.5) to talk to an Oracle 8 database on an NT machine, and am running into an a bit of a snag. 'lsnrctl status' finds the database w/o a problem. But when I try to connect in sqlplus I get the following error:

ORA-12514: Message 12514 not found; product=RDBMS; facility=ORA

I've looked in the tnsus.msg file directly, and the errors go from 12500-12513 and then skip to 12531, so that's not much help in determining where the problem is.

Anybody have any idea on this one?

Thanks
Chuck
