I've given up with the cost based analyser, based on its unwavering choice of the worst possible execution plan in every query I've ever made the mistake of showing it. Maybe it works well for gigabyte tables, I don't know. But for my queries (simple) with my tables (small, 20-30MB) it was worse than useless. And yes, I've read Oracle's peeved technical note, which stoutly defends the CBO, using the argument that even though it is quite likely to choose the wrong plan in terms of execution speed, it is in fact the 'right' plan according to its criteria. Well, that's all right then.
