dB server hardware questions

I'm working for a company that is planning to start another internet portal (like there aren't enough out there already...but this one is good, trust me). We are planning to run a dB for most of our services and I was wondering:

  1. Which server hardware would be good for Unix/Linux/Solaris and Oracle dB?
  2. Should we just have one huge computer to do all this dB stuff or a bunch of computers linked together?
  3. and, how much we should expect to pay for a fast, reliable, and scalable system?

I know these questions are very vague and there are numerous possibilities, t I just need some ideas or suggestions to start my search. ANY thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

thanks
