You may want to start with giving us some vmstat output say in a 5 second interval. Are you using filesystem? If so what kind? Are they mounted to use direct i/o? Other things to look at would be kernel level of 2.6. 2.6 had some serious performance problems with shared memory. There is still a bug when you try using async i/o on a file system under 2.6. If you have access to SunSolve look at bug # 4222164. There is a kernel level patch that should be released soon. If you are using filesystems and async i/o let me know and I can give more details.
