RMAN does OS file backups so like other hot or cold backups it protects
you from media, disk, failures.
Exports on the other hand are snapshots at a particular point of a logical grouping of data, i.e., a table its indexes and triggers or all the objects for a user. They are useful to recover individual items where a process or user has corrupted table data, but there is no way in Oracle to apply updates that happened after the time of the export to a recovered table.
Media recovery however can reapply logged activity against the recovered file(s) to bring its contents to a point in time ususally the point in time where the media failure occurred.
There is an entire manual on backup and recovery for versions 7.3 and 8+.
