You will get lots of opinion on this subject, but you have to stick to the facts.

  1. Exports only give you a point to which you can restore. That point could be up to a day old if you are doing daily exports.
  2. Exports can miss data if they are not run with the consistent=y flag.
  3. It is easier to restore just one object with an export than it is to restore the entire database up to a point in time.
  4. If you are running in archivelogmode, you can recover up to ANY point in time.
  5. Archivelogs are irrelevent if you are planning on using exports as your backup methodology.

Now for the opinion:
I personally like to mix the two different methods for my production systems. I run in archivelog mode and tape the archived logs at least daily. I then take an export of specific schemas at night just in case someone drops an object inadvertantly. The exports become somewhat irrelevent if you have adequate production controls in place, but then again, some of us are just anal...
