I have a vague memory of there being some incompatibility between DIRECT and CONSISTENT.

This isn't documents in 7.3.3, or 8+, so it may have been early versions of DIRECT, or possibly a bug. (Can anyone confirm ?)

Also - for version 8.0 you cannot use DIRECT with LOBs and a couple of the other new data types
