We are experiencing the same error when deleting records (HP-UX 11.0 Oracle 8.0.5.1)
The following is Oracle's reply :

They have identified the problem as a bug - # 866415.

 The only patch available is for HP UNIX 10.20 and 8.0.5.1, there is no other work around suggested.
 The bug is fixed in ORACLE version 8.0.5.2, however this version is not available until

 27 August for the 64 bit option.
 5 November for 32 bit

However, if you look up the bug on Metalink - it's not there!
