ORA-06401

I'm running Oracle 8i on Solaris 7.
When i try to use the OCI8 JDBC driver i get allways
a 'ORA-06401 NETCMN: Invalid driver designator' error
message.
On the Oracle OTN Web site i found in a FAQ that this error means that
the NET8 client is of a older version. But i didn't had before Oracle
on that system. So the installation was completely done with the 8i CD.
Any idea?
