No the two aren't the same. Replication is trigger based, standby is log based. There are pros and cons to each. What exactly are you trying to achieve? Also, what OS, RDBMS versions? Throughput requirements, data loss capabilities, failback requirements, etc. all make a difference in deciding which to use. If you can let us know some of those, we can provide more information.
