Which installation instructions did you use? Oracle's didn't work for me on Red Hat 6.
I couldn't get it to work until I used the instructions at http://jordan.fortwayne.com.
These worked for me on my machine at work. I've tried installing it at home, but I too get the "ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist" message. The only thing I did differently at home was that I didn't check whether I had the compatxxxxx rpms installed. If you're using Red Hat and this turns out to be your problem, let me know :-)
