This depends on the version of Oracle you are on. If it is > 7.2, then you can use unlimited for max extents and you don't have a problem in terms of runing out of extents (though this can cause other problems).

Prior to this, the maximum number of extents an object could have was determined by the block size. I don't remember the numbers anymore, frankly, but I think 249 was the max for a 4k block size...?
