I started life as a programmer and found it very motivating to create new products and fix problems. However, four years later I got bored and so moved to database and system administration.

I would say go for what you enjoy the most at the moment. You can always change later. Either skill will cover a multitude of areas and both will be in demand for a good few years. You can't really think of a long-term career in any particular area as the technology is always changing and new and more interesting things come along all the time. Go for what you enjoy but be aware of whats going on around you. Keep up to date and the world's your oyster.
