I've so far seen one good response to this and a couple of "bad" ones...

Without archive logging you can't really "recover", only "restore". That means that everything since the cold backup was done is lost - forever.

Export is quite different from a hot or cold backup. For one thing, you have to manually create the database before beginning an import. Without the consistent=Y option (which is NOT the default), the data may be inconsistent.

Backups are a critical and core function of the DBA. Make *SURE* you know exactly what you are doing, what the recoverability requirements are, and all the other important factors. This isn't something you are going to get enough reliable information about in a newsgroup to do well. It might get you started thinking about it right though.
