Thanks to Steven Poe, Oracle.

The solution to the SYS passwd problem is as follows:

  1. create a file called passwd sql with the contents "connect sys" and place it in the orainst staging area (= $ORACLE_HOME/orainst for me)
  2. Create a file called pass.sys with the contentes <your SYS password> and place it in $ORACLE_HOME/orainst. As this file gets deleted during install, you should wait until the password question to create/place it.
