Listener problem on RH 6 and Oracle 8

I try to setup a web server with RH 6.0 (i386) and Oracle 8.0.5. Installation is succesful after patching the glibcpatch.

The instance is launched and the listener is started succesfully. (see the http://www.wgs.com/LDP/HOWTO/Oracle-HOWTO-4.html)

However I can't access to the database from my client software (my database alias is correct). I get in response the ORA 01034 Oracle is not available.

Usually this ORA 01034 error happens when the instance is not started.

what's the problem ?
